Thursday 11th June – Bike ride **** and open water swim St Rome du Tarn sunny & warm

Did exercises in the sun and relaxed over breakfast. When we were sure that no velo rails were going to come through for the scheduled 10 a.m. run we made a move and set off towards St. Rome de Cernon, stopping for bread and some éclairs! Drove on through lovely scenery over towards Roquefort and branched off to see a Dolman on the road to St. Rome du Tarn. The Dolman was a really good one and really easy to find too – we could park right next to it!! Saw another one in a layby just before the village. We past a field of beautiful horses with their foals, the breed with the funky fringe! Must look up what they are. We stopped right by the river underneath St. Rome du Tarn up on the hill and had our lunch. Got the bikes off and rode along the D200 road which is along the banks of the river Tarn but as with our other rides this holiday as soon as we got going it was mostly up hill! The first mile and a half into the village was very steep but it is a lovely old town with tiny streets reached through stone arches:) We whizzed down to the bridge outside the town and rode along the road past the cascade which we have seen on a previous visit. The water in the Tarn is the most amazing green – very pretty and as the road went higher and higher above the gorge it was a fantastic sight. We had a black kite flying overhead shrieking to his mate. Our outward journey was 80% steep up and a little down but the views made it worthwhile. We stopped to look down on the barrage at Pinet but decided not to go any further because it was a long way down and the circular trip back to the van went a long way away from the river and was a lot more up! We ate our chocolate and banana and set off back – we had at least 3 ½ miles of the 7 freewheeling which was great:) 14 miles and nearly 2 hours peddling:) Back to the van to quickly pack up and head back to the perfect place to stop we had found on our bike ride. Right on the bank of the river below the village of Viala du Tarn. Unfortunately we had a fisherman who insisted on setting up extra rods quite near the van but we still sat out, sat with our feet in the water and I went for a swim in the river. We walked over to the little beach area where there is a café and a tourist boat moored. We saw it today on the way up the gorge when we were miles up above eating our snack. One of the less pushy fishermen caught a big bream but we didn’t watch to see whether he put it back or hit it on the head – we didn’t want to know!! The black kite and his family gave us a fantastic display while we ate tea outside. As usual at this time of the year the only draw back are the bloomin flies, they are everywhere!!
